Restore VM as a new VM

Hi there,

I have 2 questions regarding the restore functionality.
1.
When you restore it you have the possibility to not auto start the virtual network card and it's settings.
Since it is a server it normally has a static IP address which is the same as the original.

Is it possible to change these during restore?
So change it from statis to DHCP or change the static IP address to a different value?

2.
Is it also possible to change the computername in the VM during restore.
I do not mean the VM name, but the computername which the VM identifies himself on the domain.

While we are able to perform re-ip with VDRO, it isn't a capability of ordinary VM restore. Generally speaking we don't make modifications at the guest OS level during restore so no we can't change networking from static to DHCP or make modifications to the hostname.

Is this something Veeam wants to develop or is this not in your vision or strategy?

It would be a feature request to add this to the restore wizard. As Ronn mentioned it is already possible with the DR products and options but not for the regular vm restore.
Would this be something you need frequently?
I try to understand why you need it during a regular restore. Usually re-ip is only required during DR operations into different data center or networks. Are u using DR options as well?

It is mainly for testing purposes.
Example:
When we have new software or update for drivers or software you can not try them in a Live environment.
In that case you would like to restore the VM to a new one and test it out.

However now if you restore it for this functionality and start it, it will automatically register itself on the same domain with the same name and disconnect the live server. You can not do this in a live environment and under working hours.

A feature request would be good and fingers crossed it will be developed and realised.

ah ok.
For that case there is a different feature available called Veeam Virtual Lab.
with that you can create an isolated lab to do exactly what you mentioned above. Run tests against the same machines as you have in production but without network issues etc.

I would recommend to look into the Virtual Lab capabilities and see if that does what you need in terms of testing.

Virtual Lab works good for specific things, however Being able to re-IP a machine during a restore would be a FANTASTIC feature to have.

Example
A VM is deleted.
2 months go by, someone asks if they can retrieve a file off of it that was missed.
A restore is done, but the IP has been repurposed by another server that was recently created.
Duplicate IP issue is created and outage is caused.

Other than leaving power off, manually removing nic, changing hostname/IP this is the only way to deal with that.

Not during the restore process.
In this case the best and least amount of labor way is outside working hours.
- Shut down the live VM,
- Restore a copy of the live VM with Veeam,
- Check and if not dynamic change the MAC address,
- Start the restore VM and change IP and computername,
- After reboot start the Live VM.

Normally this should be enough. Otherwise you have to reattach the Live VM to the domain again.
