SCVMM 2022 Support

Post by nmdange »

So while v11a supports Windows Server 2022, System Center 2022 won't be out until next month. Will v11a work with SCVMM 2022 or will it block the connection? If it won't work/be supported, is v12 the planned version to add support?

We will only know once we run the GA code through its paces. But normally yes, the next release vehicle for new platform support would be V12. And we're not planning to discontinue SCVMM support, if this is what you're really asking.

When I inadvertently upgraded to SCVMM 2019 before Veeam supported it, Veeam explicitly blocked the connection with a version error. That's what I was asking about, what happens if I were to upgrade to SCVMM 2022 while still on v11a? Of course there's a chance something might not work, but if Veeam will refuse to even attempt to connect because of the version number, I can't even try it in a test environment.

Hard to say at this point as it depends on what specific API changes will SCVMM 2022 bring. For example, if they increment API version or keep it the same.

So I got my hands on the final bits, and it looks like Veeam doesn't have a hard block or anything. I was able to add my dev SCVMM server to Veeam and backup a test VM. The version of SCVMM 2022 is showing as 10.22.1287.0 vs 10.19.2591.0 for SCVMM 2019 UR3. So I guess it'll work if I upgrade my prod SCVMM server. I assume it's not officially supported yet though.

Any updates on SCVMM 2022 and when it may be supported by Veeam? We run a 4 node S2D 2019 Cluster and we are ready to migrate to VMM 2022 and Server 2022 since there are a lot of enhancements around rebuilding times for the hybrid arrays we have since we still use spinning rust. Holding off until we know Veeam supports this since I jumped ship too early when VMM 2019 was released and it broke our Veeam backups. Thanks.

Current plan is to officially support SCVMM 2022 with VBR v12 release.
QA is validating GA builds of SC2022 and everything looks good so far, not much has changed in terms of API.

/Thanks!

It's not officially supported, but I've been running on SCVMM 2022 with VBR 11a for about a month without any issues so far. @nicholas.hay if you are planning on doing a rolling upgrade, I had some issues with my dev/test S2D cluster. Still need to test more to see if it was a fluke or a bug.

Hello and good day,

just checking if there's any updates on official SCVMM 2022 support when using Veeam Backup & Replication 11a (latest build).

One of our customers is about to start an upgrade of a couple of Hyper-V clusters in a VMM fabric from Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server 2022. This involves upgrading System Center VMM to 2022 as well. The first step will be upgrading System Center VMM to 2019 and the Hyper-V clusters to 2019 (which are both supported).

Would you recommend holding off the final upgrade to System Center VMM to 2022 until the VBR v12 release ?

Thanks and Regards,

Massimiliano

Hi,
we are going to build a new cluster with Hyperv 2022 hosts and SCVMM 2022 at the end of january.
Can you you please comment if it is supported to use with 11a-latest and what limitations are going to face?

Thanks. Karsten

Hi Karsten.

VBR 11a will not hold official "Supports SCVMM2022" title.
VBR 12 will.

/Thanks!

Is it a problem for VBR to manage the 2022 cluster with SCVMM 2022 but add the cluster to VBR?

This worked before, some years ago. I remember a few people who got tired of SCVMM quirks and did this :D

Can confirm. @karsten123, it will work, but keep in mind this means that Veeam won't be able to track cross-cluster migrations. (i.e., if you move a VM from one cluster to another, you'll need to start a new backup chain for that VM)

But it's pretty normal and I see it plenty of times in customer environments to add a few or even a single cluster from an HV environment managed by SCVMM. Just be aware of the limitations on cross-cluster migrations.

Well, if it helps anyone, I have had no issues using Veeam 11a with SCVMM 2022 for over 9 months now.
