Shut down Backup-Server at last Job

Post by NobbyausHB »

Hello everybody,

I´m the new one here on Board!
So please don´t be too angry to me if I have something overseen... 8)

My plan is, to shut down the complete physikal Server after the last successful job, in my case copy the last 8 backups to tape
But I do not find any solution on the web, all tips are for pc or notebooks
The backup-server has 24 disks (2,5" nearline-SAS 6)

So why? The answer is simple - the (okay, not small) environment is running in the basement of my house and I have to reduce the amount of power consumption (my wife get the last bill from energy provider)
There are some other Servers running 24/7 and 300 € per month only for power... you know...

THX for reading :D

Hi NobbyausHB and welcome to the forum!

Could you elaborate on the specifics of your environment?
Are you backing up VMs or are you merely interested in file to tape backups?

Have you looked into Linking Backup Jobs to Backup to Tape Jobs or Creating File to Tape Jobs

Hi Nikolaj,

thx for the welcome!

Ok, more Details.
I´m running 8 VM´s (DC, RDS, Fileserver, Veeamone, S-FTP, Exchange and more...) on a very good sized Hyper-V-Host with 2 Xeon Silver 8-Core CPUs and 192 GB RAM,
Storage is a mix from SSD, 2,5" 10k SAS Drives and for Main-Storage (Pictures, Movies etc - my wife is a photographer) are 16 3,5" S-ATA Drives with 48TB total, this Server is a 4HE machine with 10G Uplink to the switch (only 2 10G Ports)
The Backup-Server is a 2HE server with a single 8-Core Xeon and 64GB RAM and 24 2,5" nearline SAS disks and also 10G link

The Backup plan actual is disk to disk and when sussesfull finished copy all backups to the HPE Storeever Tapelibrary with 7 LTO4 Tape (one cleaning tape)
After the last job - this is the copy to tape - I want to shut down the server, wakeup is over BIOS at 21:55 scheduled

Now better?

Hi Norbert,

Just a small addition - if you consider using Powershell, this thread might be helpful.

Thanks!

Hi Norbert,

Sorry, I misconstrued your initial post.
Doubling down on Natalia's advice, I'd recommend looking into Script Settings to configure shutdown actions after the last backup job.
Also, this thread (and quite a few others) might be of assistance.
