There seems to be a general issue where, due to various reasons, Hyper-V breaks the backup chain, leading to unmerged snapshots.
These cannot be deleted through normal means (right-click delete not available, behaviour known and described here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troub ... nt-storage and here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troub ... cing-disks ).
Customers report that pressing the delete key on their keyboard also doesn't work.
This behavior is sort of understandable; however, it is really annoying having to do this.
I can see tickets, forum posts and notes about this from years back up until now.
However, there still hasn't been any automated solution to this.
It is understandable that there might be limitations on Microsoft's side; however, I don't see why a tighter integration into Veeam B&R isn't possible.
Why can't Snapshot Hunter be available for Hyper-V backups?
As customers move away from VMware, it seems ever increasingly important to better integrate into alternative solutions.
There must be a way to automatically deal with this issue.
The cause, specifically for this case, is the backup chain breaking after VM configuration changes (disk removed).
This retriggers a full backup, which fails upon not being able to merge snapshots.
Veeam Support just says this is an Microsoft issue and refers to their support (which is not helpful, as they de facto dont provide any meaningful support).
Is there any other solution to this problem besides A: Moving the VM to recreate the vhdx and force a merge, B: Reimport the VM or C: shut down the vm and delete snapshots per powershell ?
Best regards
Sebastian

Re: Snapshots keep orphaning on Hyper-V
Hello, Sebastian,
Sorry to hear about the challenges you're experiencing with stuck Hyper-V checkpoints. We understand this is a frustrating situation.
Could you please share the support case number so we can review what was done and the details on the initial situation?
