Our SAN provider has a VSS add-on that I can install on our Hyper-V hosts. Will Veeam Backup Free edition support it?
If not, will it use MS VSS by default even if there is a 3rd party VSS installed?

Yes, it will use hardware VSS provider if present. Also, please note that you can toggle the provider used by going into the host's properties in Veeam.
