Unable to backup Hyper-V VM's on SMB Storage

Post by danielormsby »

Hey Folks,

I'm getting an error backing up Hyper-V VM's that reside on shared storage. I have several 2012 R2 hyper-V hosts with VM's pointed at a SMB share hosted by a server 2012 r2 machine.

Shadow Copies are enabled on the volume that houses the SMB share.

VM's that are local to the Hosts are able to be backed up, but VM's that are stored on the SMB share fail with this error:

Failed to create snapshot (Fileshare Provider) (mode: Hyper-V child partition snapshot) Details: Failed to add volume [\\FILESERVER\HYPER-VFAST\] to the VSS snapshot set Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported. --tr:Failed to add volumes to the snapshot set. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.
Retrying snapshot creation attempt (Failed to add volume [\\FILESERVER\HYPER-VFAST\] to the VSS snapshot set Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported. --tr:Failed to add volumes to the snapshot set. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.)
Task has been rescheduled

Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: Failed to add volume [\\FILESERVER\HYPER-VFAST\] to the VSS snapshot set Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported. --tr:Failed to add volumes to the snapshot set. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.

Hi Dan,

First: Welcome to the forums!
Second: Did you check all the requirements for SMB share? https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previo ... 5(v=ws.11)

Cheers

Two things:

1. Make sure "File Server VSS Agent Service" is installed on the SMB server (this is a big one)..
2. Have Veeam backup server "know" about that SMB server
