Upgrade from Version 7 to 11

Post by Jegasoft »

Hello :)

I have a few questions.
We have the Veeam B & R in the main version 7 installed.
Now the problem: we want to upgrade to the latest version.
Is that possible to upgrade first to the version 9.5 and then to v11?

Or do we then have to start with a completely new installation?

Thanks for your help!

Hello! I believe more "stops" will be required as you cannot go direct from 7.0 to 9.5U4. And naturally, new installation is always a better option whenever possible, because this will let you avoid "collecting" and then dealing with any possible upgrade issues across so many versions. There simply has been too many changes in the product in those 9 years since 7.0 was released. For example, I remember that some upgrades required you to run the job to upgrade storage format, etc. Bottom-line, going across these many versions is possible, but it's not simple and you may end up wasting more time down the road dealing with consequences comparing to just building a new install. Thanks!

Thanks for your message. Okay then the new installation will be the best possibility.
Do you know if version 11 can still read my backups from version 7?
Thanks!

Sure, it will be able to read such backups - we build our backups in such format that any further product version is capable of reading and restoring previous backups. You never know when you need to restore this data and what backup server build you have by that time, right?! :)

Hi guys, thanks again for the quick help so far.
Now a final question has arisen again: Does the new version still support the old Microsoft Windows Server 2007 Standard Foundation Edition?
It is a virtual machine running on Hyper-V 2012R2.
It will be replaced soon, but must be backed up until then.
Thanks!

As long as it's supported by Hyper-V 2012 (and I think it is) everything should work smoothly. More detailed information regarding platform support can be found here. Thanks!
