Veeam B&R Disaster Recovery Plan

Post by tsitsopoulosg »

Production Support

Hi,
I use Veeam B&R for a year and now i want to create a disaster recovery plan in case of all production servers failed.
My infrastructure are 4 physical server and 6 VM Hyper-V machines.
  • physical server a (1st domain controller)
  • physical server b (2nd domain controller, Veeam Backup Server)
  • physical server c(hyper-v server, 3 hyper-v machines)
  • physical server d(hyper-v server, 3 hyper-v machines)
Via Veeam B&R we are backing up all the VM in 3 different machines. (2 on server rooom-1 in other position).

In case that all server and network from server room failed, what best practise should i use to recover the vm from backup. In this case the Veeam Backup Server will be off. So i will have only the backup from 3nd storage infrastructure.

I plan to create a second Veeam Backup Server to DR site,so i can read the veeam backup from 3nd storage infrastructure machine.
Also i plan to use an old server to restore there, all the vm from the veeam backup until the recovery of the main site.

Can i setup a second Veeam Backup Server for this purpose or it is not a good idea? Also i didn't find an option to backup the physical domain controller. Is that possible with Veeam B&R or not?

Hi

Please check again your case number. They start with #05.
#02 is your contract number and shouldn't be shared publicly.

Yes, the second VBR server can import the backup files and restore all vms. If you have a configuration backup, you can import it to the new VBR server after the disaster event happened.
If you don't have the configuration backup, you can import the backup files to a new server. My colleague Hannes wrote a blog article about the steps: https://www.veeam.com/blog/restoring-in ... veeam.html
Also i didn't find an option to backup the physical domain controller. Is that possible with Veeam B&R or not?
You can do that with Veeam Agent for Windows:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110
Also i plan to use an old server to restore there, all the vm from the veeam backup until the recovery of the main site.
If you have the old server already at the recovery site, consider using Veeam Replicas for the virtual machines. In case of a disaster, you already have working VM replicas on the old server, waiting to be started up in the Veeam Console. You will be online much faster without recovering all VMs after the disaster happened.

Thanks
