Veeam Backup Repository Storage Sizing
Hi,
I have a customer who currently running Microsoft DPM to backup one of their system and the backup storage sizing is very straight forward which is 3 times the data.
We are in the way to convince them to go for Veeam and definitely the backup storage size would definitely less than that. I have a Veeam Sizing Tools.xlsx and I actually calculated based on their current environment. Followings are the input:
All VMs are windows 2012 and will be grouped into 1 single backup job.
Used data - 15TB
Delta Changes between each backup cycle (every 6 hrs) is very small and based on the expected growth provided by customer we came out a low 0.011% delta changes
Compression/dedupe ratio: 50% worse case
I would like to know only the backup size of the during first backup is run, therefore i put:
# of full = 1
# of rollbacks = 1
The calculated backup size was about 7.5TB which is amazing but it is quite unbelievable to us, am I getting the correct figure?
Thank you
Eddy

Re: Veeam Backup Repository Storage Sizing
The data reduction rate depends mostly on type of the data stored inside "source" VMs. In other words, on how well this data can be deduplicated. For instance, you wouldn't expect impressive deduplication/compression rates from the VM that stores mainly .jpeg images.I would like to know only the backup size of the during first backup is run, therefore i put:
However, typically you won't see ratios less than 50%, so, your estimations for the size of full backup look valid.
Thanks.

Hi Vladimir,
Yes, I understand also that compression does not do much for jpeg files. And thank you for giving a verification on the validity of the calculated sizing.
Many thanks!

Re: Veeam Backup Repository Storage Sizing
I have another question suddenly pop out of my mind. Compression and deduplication in backup, which plays the more influential role?
Thank you

I would say both. Though, you can play with configuration and see what combination of settings satisfies your needs best. Thanks.Compression and deduplication in backup, which plays the more influential role?

Re: Veeam Backup Repository Storage Sizing
When sizing repositories, the formula references "Used Data". Is this used space as reported by vCenter? Or is it space used as reported by the operating system of the VM?

Re: Veeam Backup Repository Storage Sizing
Space actually occupied by VM on the datastore (not reported by guest OS).

Re: Veeam Backup Repository Storage Sizing
Bilel, could you please clarify the question? Do you need to estimate the space required for your backup repository? Then please refer to this thread. Thanks.
