Veeam upgrade from 9.0 to 9.5

Post by dave2318 »

Hi there. I have a customer who has 3 Veeam backup and recovery 9.0.0.1715 servers backing up 4 Hyper-V 2012R2 servers in three different sites that all need updating to the latest version.

My only issue is that they backup some of the VM's across different sites, so when I upgrade the first site to 9.5 i presume it will upgrade the Hyper-V integration components on all the Hyper-V hosts.
They also do cross site replication from production storage (actual VM state)

Will upgrading the components break the other backups/replications?
If so, can i do the upgrade without upgrading the Hyper-V components? or only upgrading them on certain hosts?
is there a matrix showing which versions of Veeam are compatible with which of the veeam hyper-v integration component versions?

thanks in advance

Hi Dave,

You're right, the updated instance won't work with the two others left on the previous version, if there are shared backup components.
There is no way to upgrade the product without components.

It's recommended that all activities (backup and replication) will be stopped while servers in the upgrade process.
You can find the upgrade guide with the checklist in here, also there is a Server Components Upgrade page that can be helpful. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the info. I was hoping to do one server at a time, then verify that it was still working (before potentially breaking all backups).
Looks like I'm going to have to rethink my plan.

Thanks

I presume that when the components upgrade the Hyper-V host will not require a reboot.

thanks

Hey Dave,

I've discussed with the QA team, if it required to reboot or not.
We cannot guarantee you that a reboot won't be required, according to what we've seen the system could trigger the reboot request in some cases. Thanks!

Thanks for the info. out of 6 Hyper-V servers, 1 needed a reboot as it needed to install .net.
