Veem ZIP and restore of domain controller

Post by Yuki »

Hi all,
We have a client who is moving machines from Hyper-V to VMware. They will be purchasing a full license of Veeam for VMware, but not for Hyper-V since it will not be used after migration but first need to consolidate systems so they can fit new ones. So we need to put as many VMs on as few hosts as possible. Right now we need to move a domain controller VM from one hyper-v to another and i wanted to see if Veeam zip can do this.

The big question is if I use Veeam ZIP to back it up from one host and then restore to another - will it trigger any kind of AD restore mechanisms or will it just copy the files from one host to another this way without causing any issues?

The VM is powered off before backup is taken.

While VeeamZIP does not perform application-aware image processing, it does not matter if you perform backup of powered off VM anyway.

Ok, so as far as the VM is concerned - it was shutdown on one host and powered up on another. It won't know that it was backed up and moved and should not trigger any AD restore processes or mechanism?

That's correct. It's like powering off DC, and then powering on DC again later. No any AD restore processes are required.
