Veemzip - slow backups

Post by Ascendo »

Hi all

I've been playing around with Veeamzip, and I've noticed backups seem to be constrained to approximately the speed of the LAN (1Gig), even if I'm backing up to a local disk on the Hyper-V host. After some tracing, I noticed that the traffic goes like this:

Hyper-V host ---> Veeam server ---> Hyper-V host

Is there no way to get the Veeam backup agent on Hyper-V host to back up directly to local disk without going through the server where Veeamzip is installed?

Thanks

A

Jason, such traffic route is possible in case you're backing up to CIFS share only. In all other cases backup traffic goes from the source Hyper-V host directly to the backup destination, bypassing the backup server. Please check how do you specify the target for VeeamZIP job.

I specify the target like this: \\hypervhost\backupshare

(hypervhost in this case is the actual hyper-v host where the VM being backed up is located. The traffic still goes hypervhost ---> veeamzip server ---> hypervhost).

Please specify the folder you're backing up to as local path on the Hyper-V host.

If I specify something like D:\backups then Veeamzip tries to back up to D:\backups on the Veeamzip server, not the Hyper-V host. Or am I misunderstanding what you're saying?

Unless you're using the free version of Veeam B&R, you could create a repository pointing to the folder on the Hyper-V host and specify this repository as a target for VeeamZIP.

Then I'd suggest to install it on the host directly to avoid traffic back and forth over network.

Will Veeam run on Hyper-V server? i.e. not Windows Server + Hyper-V role

Didn't realize you also have free version of hypervisor. Not much you can do in this case. Probably having Veeam Backup as a VM on the same host and backing up to a host's local disk presented to it via pass-through would be faster, however this should be tested.
