what's the upgrade story (for backup server OS)?

Post by pesos »

Hi all,

We have a number of b&r 9.5 backup servers that are now running update 4. Is it supported to upgrade the backup server OS from win2016 to win2019?

Thanks!

Along with Update 4 came the support for Veeam components to run on Microsoft Windows Server 2019, https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... l?ver=95u4

Thanks Michael! I should have been more specific - I know 2019 is supported but my question is specifically whether or not we can upgrade an existing b&r server on win2016 to win2019.

thanks!

Hello John,
it was not tested by QA, so you can consider your scenario as unsupported (although it might work).

I didn't test 2016 to 2019. I can only remember 2012R2 to 2016 just uninstalled all backup & replication components.

Best regards,
Hannes

It does work well. I actually have VBR Servers that have been upgraded from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016 and now to Windows Server 2019. If you have a healthy server there should not be an issue and if there are any they are normally fixable or the upgrade rolls back for you. With a a good backup and VM checkpoints you have all you need to recover fast and go back. So you can go that route if you want to.

Didier is right. The upgrade should not be an issue but as with any OS upgrade take care. (After all the improvements in upgrading scenario's by MSFT OS, I still prefer to do a clean install and migrate the workloads :-))

Make sure you have done a configuration backup inside Veeam also, just in case you need to start from a clean install when something failed.
