Windows 2012 Hyper-V Offhost Proxy

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question,
If my current hypervisor is running windows server 2012 hyper-v, can my offhost backup proxy using windows server 2008r2 with hyper-v enabled?
Or need to be equivalent running windows server 2012 with hyper-v role enabled?
