Limitations of "Restore activity" Alarm

Post by RubinCompServ »

I'm starting to use the "Restore activity" alarm and it seems to have a number of glaring limitations:
  1. There is no way to exclude users. I would like to use this alarm to be made aware when one of my customers is performing a restore of a file or VM, as that would trigger one of my engineers to reach out to the customer to ensure there isn't an underlying problem. What I don't want is to be notified when one of my engineers is performing the restore (either at the behest of the customer or as part of regular restore testing). Right now, I get upwards of 50 alarms per day, only one or two of them are actually beneficial, and there's no way to tell without logging directly into VBR to take a look. This is especially odd, because the alarm contains text that says, "Initiated by: ", but it always says "Initiated by: n/a".
    .
  2. I don't know what type of restore it was (VM vs. FLR). If I have a customer restoring an entire VM, I'm much more concerned than if a customer they are just restoring a file.
    .
  3. As a matter of fact, I know nothing about the restore - I don't know what was restored, I don't know when it started or how long it took.
    .
  4. The email subject line doesn't tell me whether the restore succeeded or not. All it tells me is that the alarm changed from Information to Information. (I am aware that the information is in the body of the email and is, generally, correct.)
I am aware that VeeamONE alarms function based on Windows Event Logs, but this is all information that is available within VBR so I'm baffled that VeeamONE is still relying on Windows event logs instead of integrating with their own product to provide meaningful information. (Incidentally, Event ID 210 gets written at the beginning of the restore job and does list the user that triggered the job.)

Hello David,
This is very nice feedback. Let me review the alarm, because if I am not mistaken the alarm might be triggering at the start. But additional filtering as you mentioned should be possible in the future.

Let me discuss with the team and see how feasible is to be added in future releases.

Have you reviewed the same report? Does it have the information you require?

Also, please create a support ticket for Initiated by: n/a because that sounds like a bug that needs to be fixed, share the number please.

Thank you
