Backing up two VMs at the same time degrades performance

Post by Tos »

Hi

Our customer have trouble.

Customer want to backup two VMs that are over 1TB.

If they take a full backup of these two VMs at different times (jobs), it takes about 1.5 hours to get one VM, so it takes 3 hours in total.
However, if we perform a full backup of these two VMs at the same time (job), it takes 24 hours.

The Veeam AHV Proxy is 4CPU 16GB.
So I think the specifications are enough.

A support case (Case # 03906146 ) is open, but not much progress..
(He said that he couldn't do a reproduction test because he couldn't provide a large VM capacity.)

Customer want to backup two VMs that are over 1TB at the same time (job).

Do you know a similar issue ?

Regards
Toshi

Hello,
I'll talk to support later, but just to confirm:

- you are running the latest Veeam software version (I remember there are some updates / hotfixes)?
- you are sure that it is not a limit on the Nutanix hardware side? Meaning: if you backup two smaller VMs, do you see the same issues?
- how is load on the Nutanix cluster during backup?
- how many tasks did you configure on the proxy? 4?

Best regards,
Hannes

HI Hannes
Thank you for reply.

- you are running the latest Veeam software version (I remember there are some updates / hotfixes)?
Customer use v1.0.632 (Update 2).
It is difficult to update to latest version immediately because it is already used in production environment.

- you are sure that it is not a limit on the Nutanix hardware side? Meaning: if you backup two smaller VMs, do you see the same issues?
Yes, when customer backup two smaller VMs, the same issue don't occur.

- how is load on the Nutanix cluster during backup?
Low load on Nuranix cluster during backup.

- how many tasks did you configure on the proxy? 4?
Where can we find it ?
We checked the manual but couldn't find any description, please let me know.

Hello Toshi,
for performance issues, it is required to run the latest update. So they will need to plan time for the upgrade first.

thanks for the other answers. that helps. I need to check for the tasks settings in 1.0. I have seen it in 2.0 beta, but as you already mentioned, it's not in the 1.0 user guide and I don't have 1.0 installed.

I will contact support now to put the case on hold until the customer upgraded to the latest version. If the problem still exists, then the case can be escalated to the next tier.

Best regards,
Hannes

yes, 1.0 does not have the tasks setting

and chances are high, that the update resolves your issue
