Nutanix AHV 2.x licensing
Hello all,
I have a question regarding licensing of Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 2.x.
Documentation of Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 2.x. states the following license types can be used:
- For per-instance licenses (Veeam Universal Licensing)
- For per-socket licenses (Perpetual Socket license)
The Veeam licensing FAQ (https://www.veeam.com/faq.html) states:
Does Veeam offer socket licenses for Veeam Agents, VBR Nutanix AHV Backup Proxy, Veeam Availability Orchestrator or Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365?
No, these products are not available with per-socket licenses.
My customer currently uses Veeam Backup & Replicator with vSphere and is transitioning towards Nutanix. Veeam Backup & Replicator is currently licensed using socket based licensing.
Just to be sure, can the current license be continued, or are some additional steps required?

I think, you will have to convert your customers socket licenses to VUL.
Your distributor or Veeam sale representative can help you with the correct license type and conversion if needed.

Thanks for the feedback Mildur. Anybody from Veeam who can confirm if per-socket licenses can be continued or whether additional steps are required?

Hi Ted,
Fabian is correct, you will need to migrate to the VUL-key when protecting Nutanix workloads.
Thanks!

[MERGED] Licensing - Migrate from VMware to Nutanix
Folks,
We are considering migrating some of our VMs in VMware vSphere to Nutanix AHV.
We are using legacy perpetual per-socket licenses for our ESXi hosts, and instances for our physical machines and NAS.
Each ESXi host is using two socket licenses. If we shutdown for example two hosts, can we use those four freed socket licenses for the Nutanix host(s)? Or convert/migrate them in some way?
Bottom line: Can we continue to use our old socket licenses with Nutanix, or do we have to abandon the whole shebang and move to VUL?
Kind regards,
PJ

Hi,
Socket licenses cannot be used for Nutanix AHV, so yes, you will need to migrate to VUL to use AHV.
Thanks!

Thank you!
And when migrating to VUL, we merge the current legacy socket- and instance licenses into VUL?

Yes, you will need to contact a Veeam sales rep and discuss how to migrate from sockets to VUL keys.
