Single AHV Backup Proxy per Nutanix AHV cluster limitation

Post by tedsteenvoorden »

Hi all, I am currently planning on implementing Veeam Backup & Replication for a Nutanix environment. I noticed the following limitation in the release notes:

You can add only one AHV Backup Proxy per Nutanix AHV cluster.

This raises the question for me, whether there is enough backup processing capacity in a cluster with a large size. Since all backups must be processed by this single proxy VM.
Are there people who have experiences with this? I am curious about your experiences / findings.

Yes we definitely understand your concern. This is something our product team has been monitoring closely since we began shipping the product and to this point we have not seen any significant issues with the single instance approach. Note that the default 4 vCPU x 4GB RAM proxy appliance can be scaled up in increments of 1 vCPU+1GB RAM so if additional throughput was required the proxy could be deployed with (for instance) 8 vCPU x 8GB RAM or more.

Thanx for the feedback. Can you give a rough estimate what the maximum number of VMs is, that a single proxy can handle?

We see 500-1000 commonly. There is no fixed limit in the proxy per-se, it gets into
- proper configuration of the AHV cluster
- provide sufficient resources to the proxy (Ronn mentioned above)
- adequate networking
- schedule requirements for backup SLAs
- proper sizing of the VBR repositories to match requirements.
