Support for Data Domain repositories?

Post by cb1ocker »

I was just looking at deploying the Nutanix AHV appliance and I'm seeing in the user guide that Data Domain repositories are not supported. Is this something that will be available in the future, and if so, do you have any kind of timeline?

I can't speak to the future, but you should be able to use a DD CIFS repo. I believe it's only Boost that's an issue.

You can't backup directly to Data Domain, but you should be able to do Backup Copy to one... however, backing up directly to a deduplicating storage is not a best practice anyway.

Gostev, can you tell me more about that best practice of not backing up directly to deduplicating storage? I read the Veeam/Data Domain best practices guide but must have missed that part, and my Veeam SE didn't mention anything about that when we worked on implementation.

With our reference architecture, we recommend landing backups on raw disk for fast backup and restores (and keeping just a handful of most recent restore points to cover your operational restore needs), then making a copy to deduplicating storage for the long-term retention. This makes it the most effective way to achieve the 3-2-1 backup rule without the performance impact associated with going direct to deduplicating storage. Thanks!

Only via Boost though, right? CIFS should work?

CIFS should work, right, it will operate as regular repository. Thanks.

CIFS shares on the Data Domain work fine, I got it configured yesterday and it's working as expected. Just make sure to follow the setup instructions in the User Guide for the AHV piece as the security settings on the repository in Veeam need to be set correctly or it won't show up in the Veean AHV Web GUI during job creation.
