Historically we have been copying the .vbk once a month to Tape using Files to Tape jobs.
Now that Object storage archiving is available, am I correct in assuming we can restore all the vbk's to the new SOBR and at some point they will start getting archived off to S3, or do they need to be seen by Veeam as part of the current backup chain?

Re: Archiving backups to Object storage originally stored on Tape
Hey there Nick. So at the moment the Object Storage Report that comes with Cloud Tier does just that... Tiers data from the local performance tier to the capacity tier.
If you restored or moved a GFS VBK into the SOBR it would offload data into Object Storage if it satisfied the criteria required based on age and sealed backup chain.
So the short answer is yes, but I think a question to ask is what you want to achieve... as it sounds like long term archive around the 3-2-1 rule is what you are after?

Those backups won't be offloaded to Capacity Tier, as they won't have any connections to backup jobs. Thanks!

Thanks Vladimir, so I guess the only solution would be to start using the Capacity tier from today and then keep the archived backups on tape somewhere safe and wait for them to expire?

If there is a metadata stored along with backup files on tapes, then, you can probably restore both backup and metadata files, create a fake backup job, map it to the restored data and let Capacity Tier offload it to object storage. Thanks!
