Backup Copy job from local storage to S3 over VPN?

Post by Uki »

We are looking to begin writing local Veeam data to S3 however we do not want the Veeam server to send it over the public internet, but rather over our VPN to the VPC where the S3 bucket lives. This is a PoC we're doing with Amazon to see if it makes sense to send our tertiary copy to AWS or find another solution. If we decided to move forward we'd most likely end up with an AWS CrossConnect to segment that traffic off to that.

Is there a configuration example that allows us to use the AWS Storage Gateway as a gateway in Veeam to move the backup data to S3 or a way for us to configure Veeam to route through our VPN to connect to the S3 bucket natively?

I came across this KB article but wasn't sure if this was the best way to go about what we're looking to do. https://www.veeam.com/kb4226

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

yes, the KB article should be a good starting point. There is also another discussion ongoing here.

Please let us know how it goes and whether something should be added to the KB article.

Best regards,
Hannes

PS: I asked support to close the case because it's a "how-to" question

The best way is to use AWS Privatelink indeed (the article and the referenced topic describe such configuration in details).

Alternatively, you can configure AWS Storage Gateway in Virtual Tape Library mode and use it along with tape jobs.

Thanks!
