metadata

Post by balma01 »

When the data from VBK is offloaded to the cloud, a copy of metadata remains on the Veeam repository/server.
Please can you clarify which are the infos inside the metadata?
In which files are they stored on the repository?
VBM?
Thanks

Hello,
there are two types of metadata
1) the VBM file. that's just job information and you can open it with any editor. It's XML.
2) backup data metadata. every backup file (vbk, vib, vrb) contains data and metadata. metadata is stored redundant in each file. the backup files itself are self-sufficient. that's why metadata and data is stored in the same file. That's different for example for NAS backup files. There you can see extra folders that only have metadata files.

The metadata you are asking for is stored in the vbk / vib / vrb files. You can see if you browse the file system. The offloaded VBK / VIB is very small. That's because it only contains metadata

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanks,
attaching an old repository to a VBM server and importing existing backups, the metadata used to import the backups are the ones stored in the backup files?
Which is the purpose of the VBM metadata?

VBM speeds up things. For example, if the VBM file is present, then the backup import process will complete much faster.
