Private S3 object storage forecast for immutable /block generation retention

Post by StanoSedliak »

Hi,

I red some posts about retention for S3 immutable storage on this forum, I know also the link for block generation in admin gui and why its used etc... but please if you can help me to clear this out for me. I don't want to reduce it via regedit etc...
object-storage-as-a-backup-target-f52/h ... 87923.html

We would like to to setup Veeam backup copy job with 7 days retention to our S3 object storage with immutable function, we need that these backups will be immutable for 7 days.

If I will setup on the S3 storage: "make recent backup immutable for 7 days", I will get some days from block generation on top of it.
If I will setup in the backup copy job, retention 7 days, how much restore points I will have on my S3 backup storage as the block generation factor can be + 0-10days on top of it. Its somehow predictable?
(I need to know it because our customers have big incr. jobs)

Full: 1000GB
Incr#1: 200GB
Incr#2: 200GB
Incr#3: 200GB
Incr#4: 200GB
Incr#5: 200GB
Incr#6: 200GB
Incr#7: 200GB
Incr#8: 200GB
Incr#9: 200GB
etc...

Thank you!

Hi Stano,
the formula is always : retention + immutability + block generation. As you use a local object storage, block generation is 10 days so:

7 + 7 + 10 = 24 days

You need to plan for 24 days of incrementals.

Hi Luca,

so if we need just 7 days we could save some days if I will setup
Retention 3 + immutable 1 + block generation is 10 so with this setup we can do restore for the last 14 days or?

Sure, but minimum time for immutability is still 7 days: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
