Question about Backup Copy Jobs to Azure

Post by f0st3r »

I have setup an Azure Blob Storage container for my offsite backup copy jobs. If something was to happen to my Veeam B&R server, could I access the files with a new Veeam B&R install? I brought up a server in Azure and connected to the storage container and got a warning stating it would break my current jobs so I did not proceed.
Just wondering if I could even use the data if my B&R server was dead.
Thanks

Hi Bryan

Yes, you can connect the storage container to any Veeam Backup & Replication server, with the same or higher patch level. Then start a rescan to import the backups into the empty configuration database of a new Veeam Backup & Replication server.
From there, you can use all restore operations available.

If you have the configuration backup, you can import it to a new backup server. With this option, you don't have to connect the container or do the rescan. Backups will be immediately available to the new server.
I brought up a server in Azure and connected to the storage container and got a warning stating it would break my current jobs so I did not proceed.
When you connect the container to a new backup server, a file with the owner ID is written. This is a protection that not two backup server write to the same folder structure simultaneously.
Would you continue with the connection, the new backup server will be the owner and jobs on the old server will bring an error. We know about this behavior and it may change in a future version.
