Questions about Governance Mode for Amazon S3 Immutability

Post by matsusan »

I have a couple of questions about the registry setting for S3 Governance Mode mentioned in this blog post:
https://community.veeam.com/blogs-and-p ... art-7-6757

1. Will this information be added to the official user guide?

2. Does this registry setting still work for VBR v13?

Thanks,
Ryoma

Hi Yyoma,

1.) We usually don’t document registry keys in our Help Center. If you’re looking for an official resource, please refer to the official What’s New document for v12.1, page 9.

2.) Yes — it’s the same path and key name for v13 on a Windows-based backup server. If you’re using v13 with the Veeam Software Appliance, you need to configure it via the Host Management UI (KB4779).

Keep in mind that this registry key is typically used by service providers who need a way to delete customer backups from their S3 storage when a contract is cancelled before the immutability period is over. As a customer with your own object storage appliance, using this key may negatively affect the security of your backups.
You also need new Object Storage Backup Repositories when you decide to use the key on existing backup servers. After applying the Governance Mode key, existing backup jobs to immutable Object Storage Backup Repositories will fail.

Best regards,
