Restore from Azure Storage

Good morning,
i just finished a backup job with Scale Out repository between my local infrastructure and an azure storage account.

Now, in case of a disaster, how can I restore the VM starting from Azure blob storage? I searched everywhere without luck, can you help me?

Hi Emanuele

In case you have lost your backup server, follow this procedure.

1) Install Veeam Backup & Replication server on a new Server
2) Add your Azure Blob Storage and import the backups
3) Start restoring your VMs.
If you have a configuration backup, you can import those instead of doing step 2.

Ok but just for a testing purpose, do I really need to Install Veeam backup and Replication on a new server? I can't use the same server where I created the backup job and scale out repository?

1) if the only option is to add a new server for import the backup from storage, is the same if I install it in azure VM or onprem the new Veeam Backup and Replication?
2) how can I see if I have a configuration backup?
3) from Object storage backup, where can I restore the vm? Only onprem in my VMware environment or can I turn on also in Azure vm?

For testing purpose, you can restore directly from Backups/Capacity Tier in your backup console. But don‘t forget the egress costs. Microsoft will bill you for the data download from Azure Blob Storage.

If you want to test the import, a second backup server is required. And you must put the capacity tier extend in maintenance mode. This is documented here:

IMPORTANT
Only one backup server must interact with an object storage repository. If you want to perform disaster recovery testing, you can add the object storage repository to another backup server. However, on the initial backup server, you must switch the object storage repository to the Maintenance mode. Otherwise, metadata on the object storage can get corrupted or out of sync, and you will not be able to restore data.

Doesn‘t matter. You can install the backup server on any supported machine.

All restore options are supported. Guest OS Files, application Items, back to OnPrem, as an Azure VM.

Also we are hitting this problem:
we just finished a backup on a scale out repository, we are expeting to find the .vbk or something file somewhere in the azure blob storage account. But it seems that there are no big files in the storage.
Can you please tell me where exactly I have to go to see if the files has been uploaded correctly? Thanks

There are no backup files on Object storage. We split each backup file in unique blocks. Those blocks are copied to object storage. You need a veeam backup server to read those objects.

If the restore point is visible in „Capacity Tier“ (the number 2 from my screenshot), then the restore point was successfully uploaded to Azure Blob. You can check backup properties for each VM to see all restore points (number 3 from my screenshot).

Hi,

I'd be most grateful, if anybody could shed some light on the following use case.

Current Topology

1) Backups are taken with Veeam (v12) in primary region.
2) Backups are stored on a Blob Storage account that is replicated with RA-GRS to DR region.
3) Unable to test recoveries in DR without failing over Storage account.

Use case example:

1) When failover is initiated it is assumed that the primary region has become unavailable. The Secondary becomes the Primary.
2) When failover is completed, the DR copy becomes a primary with LRS only – replication would need to be re-initiated and a second fail over carried out – incurring cost and time.

Objective:

How might a manual test failover of the Blob Storage account be achieved and applications recovered in DR region without disruption to production backups?

As of last year March, above test use case, wasn't on the Veeam roadmap.
