Restore Test from S3

Post by Daniel N. »

Hi,

we want to test restore from our S3 capacity tier. I followed the advice in this thread, but run into problems.

I have one SOBR with 4 x Windows and 1 x S3-compatible backup repositories. I put the Windows repositories in maintenance mode and started a SureBackup job.

Code: Select all

10.03.2022 14:35:52 Getting virtual lab configuration
10.03.2022 14:36:48 Starting virtual lab routing engine
10.03.2022 14:36:54 Error dc01 - Publishing
10.03.2022 14:36:56 Stopping virtual lab routing engine
10.03.2022 14:36:59 Error: Backup file cannot be accessed because it is located on extent in maintenance mode.
10.03.2022 14:36:59 Job finished
10.03.2022 14:36:59 Sending e-mail report
I was expecting that Veeam pulls the restore point from S3 storage when the Windows repositories are unavailable.

I can verify that the VM "dc01" is available on the S3 storage by browsing to Home>Backups>Object Storage and seeing the restore points for that VM.

My goal is to test a disaster scenario where we must restore from S3.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Hi Mildur,

since the statement is six months old, I opened a support case to request official information on the fix. We are currently in a proof-of-concept and cannot complete the project until we have successfully completed a restore from S3.

If there is no hotfix available, I asked for an alternative way to do a restore validation from S3.

For the moment, you can manually start a instant vm recovery session from the „/backups/object storage“ menu in the vbr console. It‘s a manual test, but better than nothing.

If you have V11a, you don‘t need to put the performance tier in maintenance mode, veeam will use the capacity tier data to start the manual instant vm recovery.

I‘m not working for veeam, so I can‘t comment when a hotfix will be released.

Apologies, I thought you worked at Veeam. Your solution was working, thank you. We tested with a non-critical VM. Although this is not the ideal way, it was sufficient to complete the POC.
