Retention and S3 container

I am testing off loading long term backups to an S3 container.

Will Veeam manage the retention of snapshots stored on external S3 containers and delete old snapshots?

Yes, we'll take care of that - the backups stored in Capacity Tier are still the subject to backup job retention policy. You can read additional details here.
