S3 offload from hardened repository

Post by RubinCompServ »

Hey all. When a SOBR contains a hardened repository extent and an S3 extent (for Capacity Tier), is it expected behavior to not perform the S3 offload directly from the storage, but to perform it from a different machine instead (in my case, the VBR itself)? Is this changed behavior from v11?

Hi, David. I recall hearing something about this recently. From what I remember, currently this is by design as devs did not want to run the required component on hardened repositories for added security considerations, but after closer review with the security team the agreement was reached that it should not present problems. So this limitation will be removed in future updates and "direct to hardened" will be possible.

@HannesK is this scheduled for 12.2 or later?

Thanks

Thanks @Gostev! This one caught me off guard when my offloads started failing after I upgraded from v11a to v12.1.

Hello,
SOBR offload works directly to S3. If that does not work, support should look at that (please post the case number for reference)

Backup copy jobs from Hardened Repository to object storage go through the gateway server (fallback to mount server, in many cases the backup server). And the gateway server does not run on Hardened Repository (planned to improve in 12.2).

For your scenario, everything should work the same as in V11.

Best regards,
Hannes

Hi,

i ran in the same unexpected behavior.
Primary backup to VHR and backup copy to object storage repository (on premises).

So the workaround is to set the mount server to a decent machine that can handle it? And the system requirements are the one for Gateway Server, right?
Or is it worth to think about SOBR with offload?

Is the „fix“ confirmed for 12.2?

Thank you
Karsten

Hello,
I would say 3x yes to your questions (which does not mean I say "use SOBR" - it depends whether you have resources to host mount server).

Yes, it looks good for 12.2.

Hannes

Is this limitation noted somewhere in the documentation?
