SOBR Tiering and dedupe appliances

Hi all,

We're currently using an EMC DataDomain (dedupe appliance) as backup target. It's configured as backup repository (with ddboost).
But the Datadomain is almost full and cannot be expanded anymore. I know that DataDomain has the cloudtier possibility but that's also not possible for this device.

We're looking into SOBR and object storage to extend its capacity:
-Can a dedupe appliance be configured as SOBR?
-Can it be transformed/migrated to SOBR without losing the current backup data?
-And finally, is it possible to add object storage to archive the oldest data?

All three things are correct. If something would not be possible then you will get warned in the UI.
There is however one thing to remember. Deduplication rehydration is a very slow process and the offload could take some time.

As well offloading old data will not free up much space because of the deduplication effect. Example. You have 10 Full backups that are nearly the same (low change rate between them). Then offloading 9 backups will not free up any significant space. It is in the end how dedup appliances work.
