Store yearly in object storage

Post by turbulence »

Hi all,

We have both an on-prem backup repo, and an offsite backup repo. On top of this, we're looking to leverage object storage (AWS) to store immutable yearly backups only (in other words, anything that is not a yearly should not be sent to object storage).

To achieve this, we've setup the following:

- Backup job to on-prem repo - Forward Incremental with weekly synthetic full - GFS retention enabled
- Backup copy job to offsite repo - GFS retention enabled
- Backup copy job to SOBR (performance tier is the same device as the offsite repo but a different folder) with AWS as the capacity tier

The SOBR is configured to move backups older than 7 days to object storage, and the copy option is not enabled.

The SOBR backup copy job is configured to periodically copy every 1 day at midnight, and retain 2 restore points (because you can't select 0). The GFS settings are configured to retain 1 yearly backup, but 0 weekly, monthly and quarterly backups. Even though a nightly copy happens to the SOBR, nothing is moved to object storage because we are only moving items older than 7 days (as above).

In order for us to get the first full backup to object storage (which will be considered the yearly), my understanding is that on the SOBR backup copy job, we would need to schedule the yearly backup to run at a point in time (by default it is the first Sunday of the year, so it'd need to be changed or else we would have to wait).

I hope this all makes sense. Is this the best way to go about achieving this, or is there a better / more efficient way?

Your understanding is correct, for the yearly restore point to be set aside, the regular full needs to reach the day specified in the backup copy job settings. You can temporarily change it to something close enough and then set it back to the first Sunday of the year.
