Unable to restore backup from scale out (S3 Standard)

Post by florianbbabxp »

Hello everyone,

I'm testing to export my backup to the cloud and the backup seems to work, but I can't restore the data from other veeam server, can you explain me the missing step? :)

Here's my configuration:
-> Scale Out backup (Local disk + Replication of each backup to S3 (+Encryption on S3 only configured in ScaleOut option)).

I can see the same size of space used locally and on S3.

Now I'm trying to restore data from another Veeam server without any configuration (As would be the case if a major problem were to happen). There are a few folders on S3 and no Backup configuration:
LongTerm/Veeam/Encryption/KeySetParts/"2 keys ..."
LongTerm/Veeam/Encryption/EncryptionV2
Archive/Veeam/Encryption/"Folder with generated name"
Archive/Veeam/Encryption/KeySetParts/"2 keys ..."
Archive/Veeam/Encryption/EncryptionV2

Thank you in advance for your reply :)

Hi Florian,

The structure for object storage is explained here. You won't find backup files (VIB, VBK) in the traditional sense because, in object storage, we store backups differently. Each restore point is divided into smaller objects to enable more efficient and cost-effective recovery.

To proceed, set up a new backup server, connect it to the bucket, and import your backups.
Please remember that if the primary backup server is still operational, you need to set the capacity tier to maintenance mode before connecting it to a second backup server.

If the connection and import procedure does not work, please open a case with our customer support team for further investigation.

Best regards,

Hi Fabian,

Thank you for your reply ! I tried this, but the job is skipped during importation and I don't know why (no information is provided).
I will contact the support.

Hi Fabian, I finally solved the (second) problem of the backup not being imported because I had an older version on the restore server.
Thanks again for your detailed answer, which helped me a lot :)

Have a good day.

Hi Florian

Thank you for the update.
You are correct. Backup Server must be the same or a higher version to read metadata and backup files.
I strongly recommend to use the same version for the original and testing server. Using a higher VBR version on the test server may introduce issues with continuing the backups with the older server. Therefore both server should be on the same level.

Best,
