Veeam & Synology Question

Post by kcalderw »

We currently have all our Veeam backups stored directly to our synology NAS. I'd like to also add an automated backup off-site to either Wasabi or Backblaze. Is there direct integration in Veeam to do this or would it all be done via Synology?

Generally, Veeam support does not recommend storing backups on SMB shares on NAS devices. They say most of the corrupted backups they encounter are due to the low-quality drivers/hardware/SMB implementations on these devices. But you can add a Veeam repository for Wasabi or Backblaze, and copy backups to it, all using Veeam.

Hi kcaiderw

Rob is right on spot.

You can either use a Backup Copy Job directly to Wasabi/Backblaze.
Or you can migrate your synology repository to a SOBR and use object storage as a Capacity Tier.
i strongly suggest to consider to use immutable S3 buckets for protection of your backup files.

Capacity tier wold have the benefit that no additional job is required. But backups are kept for time period as configured in the backup job.
if you want to keep your backup copy for a different time period, you should use a backup copy job to send the backups to object storage directly.

Veeam fully supports copying backups from any repositories to object storage and that's the functionality you should be using. You won't get technical support from Veeam in case of any issues with backups copied using 3rd party technologies. Thanks
