Restore issue
Hi there.
We have 2 sites (A and B).
Veeam does backups of Site A into S3 storage located in Site B.
We try to restore some data of Site A from S3 storage to Site B.
But traffic is going non-optimal path - from S3 storage located Site B to Site A and return to Site B, inspite of Veeam proxy of Site A and performance tier storage are in maintenance mode.
Any ideas to resolve it?

Re: Restore issue
Hi Aleksey
You need a S3 Gateway server in your Site B to keep the traffic in Site B.
If the gateway server is not configured, your VBR server in Site A will be used for reading backups from the s3 storage.
Second, it also depends what you want to restore.
Application data? Files or Folders?
Best,
Fabian

Re: Restore issue
Thank you Fabian
I'll check S3 Gateway configuration.
Usually we restore files (VHDX).

Re: Restore issue
Yes. You need a Linux or windows server acting as the gateway server on your Site B.you mean we need S3 gateway configured on Site B and object storage with following settings:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110
This server will be responsible for talking to the s3 object storage. If you only have the gateway server in Site A, Site A will first read the backups from the object storage and then send the data back to Site B to the hypervisor.
Maybe you can add your Hyper-V server from Site B as the gateway server?
I'm not sure if we have a user guide explaining all the different restores with their data flow.Could you please share links about it?
For example, FLR restore normally runs from Mount Server directly back to the target system if you choose to restore it to the original location. For Application level restore the backup will always be mounted on the machine where you have started the Veeam console.
Restore as VHDX files or restore entire VMs directly back to the hypervisor?Usually we restore files (VHDX).
Best,
Fabian

Re: Restore issue
Hi Aleksey
I checked in my lab. Configure a dedicated Gateway Server and use "Restore VM files" to restore your VHDX file.
Data will flow over this components:
- Object Storage > Gateway Server > Target Location

Re: Restore issue
Thanks a lot Fabian
We've adjusted S3 gateway settings and after was able to restore data with right traffic path.
We have one more question:
Is there way to copy backups from S3 storage to tape library located at the same site (B) directly?

Re: Restore issue
No, you cannot archive data from Capacity Tier to tapes, in your case Glacier might be a better option for long-term retention purposes (if that's what you are after).

Re: Restore issue
You mean to use Amazon S3 Glacier or Microsoft Azure Archive Storage for there purposes?
Am I getting right archive tier can be cloud-based only (mentioned above)? May be there are On-Premise solutions?

Re: Restore issue
Yes, only this two cloud based solutions (AWS / Azure) are available for the archive tier. Also your capacity tier needs to be one of this clouds, which I believe it is not.
In Veeam V12 you may use direct backup copy to object storage instead of using a SOBR and capacity tier. This would allow you to write backups directly from your object storage repository to a tape.
Best,
Fabian

We use MinIO (On-Premise) and thus we can't use archive tier, can we?Also your capacity tier needs to be one of this clouds, which I believe it is not.
