Restoring backups exported from AWS to a Snowball Edge

Post by pgates »

Hello,

We have a few backups stored at AWS, and we're trying to restore from an on-site Snowball Edge containing data exported from AWS. However, Veeam is not able to detect the backups on the Snowball, though it is able to locate the bucket and appropriate folder. When I put in a support ticket the tech told me that the format AWS uses for object storage is incompatible with Veeam's standard format and that the data is converted on the AWS end, meaning that the data on the Snowball would need to be converted somehow before Veeam can see it.

Is it even possible to restore from a Snowball? Sales told us that this should be possible, but I haven't been able to find any documentation detailing the process. If this is not possible, are there other cloud storage solutions that would be able to ship us a drive containing the backups so we could restore directly from the drive? Our internet connection is too slow to perform a recovery over the internet in any reasonable amount of time.

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

Can you maybe provide the support case number for more details? The answer does not really make sense to me.

Best regards,
Hannes

My case number is #06058998

The pathing on the device is different from Veeam's standard pathing, e.g. one path in the Repository is
  • Clients/{dc483169-6e0f-4cc0-a4c9-1c58ebc53ebe}/7b7131a5-531f-4a4e-9a2a-22955548f278/BackupInfo
There are tens of thousands of smaller files instead of VIB and VBK files. My best guess is that the helper appliance splits the backups to work better with AWS immutability or data storage/deletion costs or something like that, but I can't know for sure.

@pgates What you are describing is how object storage works with veeam. When we write data to object there wont be any vib or vbks as we split into 1mb(default) objects. Can you confirm for me how you are connecting to the snowball appliance? Are you using the s3 connector or are you trying to connect via nfs or cifs.

I am using the S3 connector and added the repository using the wizard designed for Snowball Edge.

Scanning the object repository in Veeam shows no backups on the repo?
