SOBR Instant Offload + Capacity Tier Aging

Post by bwoodard »

Hello,

Once monthly we run manual full backups of our environment with the option to 'copy backups to object storage as soon as they are created'. We then lock this data using an immutable policy, and hold these monthly fulls each for one year as a form of airgapped backups. This works fine for the first month, but on subsequent months we want to conserve local storage space by deleting the local full backup before issuing the next full backup. However, whenever I attempt to delete the local disk backup the Veeam console presents the following message:

"Deleting backup from disk will remove its dependent copy from the Capacity tier. If you are trying to free up disk space in the Performance Tier, use the backup file offload functionality in the Backup Properties dialog instead."

Basically, after about 30 days we want to delete the local backups while retaining the cloud backups. It is also a requirement for us that the local backups begin offloading to object storage as soon as they are complete. Is the correct way to accomplish this by selecting both the options to 'copy backups to object storage as soon as they are created' and 'move backups to object storage as they age out of the operational restore window' when setting up the scale-out repository? The desired outcome would be for local backups to begin replicating to object storage immediately, and for the local backups to be deleted after the next full backup is taken to conserve local storage space. We always want to retain the most recent backup copy at a given time on local storage to support faster restoration times. If not, is there a way to accomplish what we are trying to achieve?

Yes, you're absolutely correct in your thinking: copy+move is the correct way to accomplish this. We designed these two policies to work along specifically with your scenario in mind, as this was a common ask. Thanks!
