Start/Stop/Control/Test Azure SOBR offload

Post by marius402 »

Hi Every1,

How can you manually start SOBR offloading (to Azure Blob), gracefully stop SOBR tiering, and restart the SOBR tiering where last stopped or failed (e.g. after Time Limit Window).

I have a 2.2TB store that needs to Sync, and this will take a few days. The system is not available 7am to 7pm, so any sessions must be stopped at 7am.

How do you throttle bandwidth while offloading to Azure? The Azure Blob is a name, not an IP. How can you test the maximum throughput from the VBR to Azure (similar to iPer3)

Regards

Marius

Hello,
I would suggest to use automatic "stopping" and "starting" by configuring the window for allowed transfer.

Azure bandwidth traffic throttling is done together with any other "internet" traffic. The alternative is that you create extra rules with the Azure IP ranges.

Best regards,
Hannes

Hi Hannes,

Question: will the stop start window allow the Sync to continue, or will it start from fresh again? And it seems that the Sync does not automatically kick off as soon as the Window is open

Is the Azure IP's not dynamic IP's? I think it is just the Blob name that stays the same, but the IP's can change?

Regards

Marius

Hello,
it will continue. If copy does not start with the Window, then please check with support. The move happens every 4h. That can be configured with the SOBRArchivingScanPeriod registry key (default 4)

Code: Select all

Key: SOBRArchivingScanPeriod
Type:REG_DWORD
Default value: 4
Description: Value in hours which defines the periodicity of the automatic Offload to Capacity Tier. Set to any interger value.

yes, that's why I wrote ranges (second google hit) :-)

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanx Hannes,

I will follow and read through the documents.

What is the risk of setting the Sync to start every 1 hour to get to the closest time to starting it immediately when the Sync Window is available?

Regards

Marius

higher load is the only risk that comes into my mind

Great, I will change the setting to hourly. The throttling will then be the responsibility of the bandwidth limitation and operational window

@Hannes: Is the SOBRArchivingScanPeriod key installed by default when SOBR gets added, or where must this key be created?

The registry key merely controls how often the candidates for backup offload are determined among all backup files.
In your case I would not mess with it at all... you can always start offload manually with Ctrl+RightClick menu on SOBR.

I was thinking about answering the CTRL+right click and I personally would not want to click on it a couple of days :-)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\ is the path for most Veeam registry keys. Usually the keys posted on the forums do not exist per default.

Thanx Hannes, we are moving to about 30 sites now, so I would set it to 1 hour until all sites are Sync'ed and then move it back to every 4 hours.

Yes, I could not find the keys there, so I will add it and monitor.

Regards

Marius
