quick migration for domain controller between two esxi host

Post by aacable »

I have 3 ESXI HOST servers.
I also have two domain controller.
DC1 = virtual = windows 2008R2 > ESXI HOST SERVER 1
ADC = virtual = windows 2008R2 > ESXI HOST SERVER 2

Can I use VEEAM QUICK MIGRATION option to MOVE DC1 to new ESXI HOST SERVER 3 ?? without damaging :oops: anything ? :?:
what are the best options available? (taking DC offline/shutdown is no issue as it would be done in night when there is no load)

Regard's

if Quick Migration doesn't use VSS is better shutdown that VM.

After the migration the moref ID changes so you need add the 'new vm' to your veeam jobs an map backup/replica to the existing

Syed,

Yes, you can use Quick Migration in this case, however I would also recommend leveraging replication jobs with AAIP enabled to move your VMs to another host.

Thanks!

This might sound crazy, but if you can shut down the VM DC1 you can move the VM with vSphere Web Client: right click the VM and choose Migrate...
This leaves the moref ID for backups unchanged.

If the esxi hosts are not managed by a vCenter server, you can just unregister the VM on one host and re-register on the destination host if your storage is shared.
Moving a powered off VM is much easier than a running one if you cannot leverage vMotion.

Hi Lars,

Yes, this could be the option too, however if the OP wants to have minimal downtime, then Veeam is the way to go.

Thanks!

[MERGED] : Quick Migration

Post by jjonathan313 »

I am looking to find out if I can Quick Migrate 2 Active Directory Servers (2012/R2) to a new VmWare host. Unforutnately vMotion is not an option as I have the Essentials License. Both hypervisors are 5.1 based. Is there any known issues with doing this? Would it cause an AD rollback state?

Thank you!

Hi, Jonathan,

As mentioned above, the best option you have is to use replication job with Application Aware Image Processing option enabled. Otherwise (Quick Migration), be aware to power DC VMs down first in order avoid application consistency issues.

Thanks.

Hello v.Eremin,

Thanks for your help! Would this be able to be done with the free version of Veeam v7?

Thank you.

Replication jobs are not available in the free version, however you can use quick migration and powered off DC VMs to migrate them to the new host.
