Tape changer alert

Post by rauer »

Hey there!

i did get the following message at the beginning of my backup:

Tape changer alert: "The tape drive has a Problem with the application Client Interface: "

After the ":" there is nothing.

I don't know what to think about this, or what i have to do?

The Tape library worked fine with BUE.

The Backup seems to running normal. I can't already tell, because 14 TB take their time, and no tape change of the robot has yet been necessary

As far as I know, you might also get the aforesaid error when the drive has identified an interface fault. And you should check the cables and cable connections and/or restart the operation. Thanks.

I'm having this issue as well. Are support tickets permitted for people running the timed demo of Enterprise Plus Edition?

As mentioned above, one of the reasons might be a device interface fault. So, it might be worth examining the conditions of the cables/connections or restarting operation.

Anyway, the best way to address any technical issue is to open a ticket with the support team and let them investigate it directly. Thanks.

I figured out, i only get the error, when i use tapes with veeam for the first time.

Tape sets already used, don't produce this error.

Strange. So, the error does not appear again at the moment, because i have used all tapes now for one time.

Same issue here. First time job runs with new tapes:
9/8/2013 10:00:15 AM :: Tape changer alert: The tape drive has a problem with the application client interface:
When I restarted the job it ran without a problem.

I move 6 tapes into the specific media pool & performed a short erase. Unfortunately I am getting the same error. The funny thing is it looks as though the job is still running. When I click on the first job in list it says the backup job completed successfully, even though it is not done yet.

Any other ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

Rick, nobody in this thread has shared his support case ID so far, so I cannot track whether there is any resolution/workaround for this error. Please open your own case so that support could review your deployment and job logs. It would be much appreciated if you could post the case ID here for further tracking. Thanks.

I spoke with Jared late last week Case # 00451738, and after testing patch 1, so far the error is gone.

Yep, the issue when the changer alerts are incorrectly interpreted as drive alerts has been fixed in the patch#1. So, for all new-comers, in order to fix the said problem, kindly, download and apply the patch#1 (or later patches).

Thanks.

I still get the message, after applying the patch #1 (7.0.0.715)
I've opened a case ([ID#00460937), but so far, no response.
It does the same thing as before - I can use tapes that have been used before, but the other six tapes in the library, it can't inventory. It will erase them, and do a catalog, but not inventory.

Hi, Paul, I can confirm that this issue was supposed to be fixed in patch#1. So, kindly, keep working with the support team on understanding why the released patch hasn’t solved it.

Thanks.

Hi all! I've noticed the same error today. After some investigating in my environment and trying to quick erase the tape I've got a weird answer to my problem: the tape was write-protected...

My tape library (Tandberg T24) shows error code 19. Maybe there is a possibility to add a more detailed error message to the backup log in a future release of veeam?

Regards

Hi, Markus,

I’m wondering what product version you’re using, since many of the issues related to the misinterpretation of changer alerts have been fixed in patch#1.

Thanks.

Hi Vladimir,

I'm using the latest Veeam B+R Version 7.0.0.764.

And today... the error is back. The Job overview shows "Tape drive alert: The tape drive has a problem with the application client interface. Check the cables and cable connection. Restart the operation."

I can see the needed tape in my backup infrastructure on the correct location "Slot 2". The last media set is from 19.11.2013 02:02. There is no retention policy set for the media pool the tape resists in ("Do not protect data" option).

I've tried to restart the tape job right now and it shows the same error after a short period of time (around 2 minutes after starting).

Checked the tape directly in front of the library... its not write protected.

I'm using a TANDBERG T24 Library (Webinterface shows the following information: Library: EXABYTE MAGNUM 224 with Firmware Version C304 / Drive: HP Ultrium 5-SCSI with Firmware Version Z33U)

Now the weird part... after short erasing the tape and restarting the job: everything runs at usual...

Regards

The alert you're getting seems to be different than the one our customers have previously had. Your alert notifies that tape device couldn't read the medium barcode for some reason. Can you describe the situation when this alert shows up and why you want to get rid of this informative message? Thanks.

Are saying that this issue occurs whenever you run backup to tape job? Or that it was just one occasion and now this problem has already moved away? Thanks.
