Feature request - Rotated media

Post by Ezaffa » 1 person likes this post

Hi, I'd like to have to have the possibility to rotate backup media, i.e external hd. On VBR is possible to modify a registry key (ForceCreateMissingVBK) that allows to have always valid backup on rotated media, right now I'm doing some testing on this with VBR 8 and it works well. Can this feature be expected on VEB too?
Anyway nice software, thank you.

I would like to add to this.
Just installed and am playing around with Veeam Endpoint backup and would like to be able to rotate out an external USB every week.
Thanks,
David P.

David,
By the way right now you can use 'At storage attach' option of the schedule to trigger backup to the USB drive, once the target drive is attached.

+1, would like to add that I REALLY want this feature. Especially if it could support round trip rotation. i.e., I have 2 (or 3, or 4, etc.) HDDs, I label them A and B. Sunday of Week 1, I attach A. Backup runs to A for the entire week. Sunday of Week 2, I replace A with B, bring A to offsite. Backup runs to B for the entire week. Sunday of Week 3, I exchange B for A (B goes offsite, A comes back on site), Backup runs to B for the entire week. And so on. This provides excellent disaster recovery options for consumers. Ideally, this would resume flawlessly and allow multi-month retention (limited by disk size(s) of course) and the backup interface would tell me when I need a specific medium because the data I want is not on this weeks disk because it's too old.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the feedback. One (last?) question on this topic. Do you believe for a consumer we would need more than 2 USB devices to rotate? I personally don't know any consumer that has more than 2 USB devices for backup, but I don't know everybody of course ;-)

I have a client that uses rotated USB devices (RD1000) with six different hdds that are rotated out each week, and they have two of these set up.

I always recommend to use 3 different USB media:
1 - attached to the machine
2 - on hold on site
3 - stored at another place (at a friend or elsewhere)

And then rotate 1->3 3->2 2->1
So the latest version is always stored external - and during the time I need to transfer the media from/to the external storage there is still a device attached.

Rotated drive support is available in RC build, please test it and let us know if it meets your requirements. Thanks!
