Exchange, VSS, replication and excluding disks

Post by jeremystw »

This is probably more of a VSS question then anything but here it goes. Here is the scenario
Exchange server with 4 disks (4mdks)
disk 1-system
disk 2- DB1
disk 3- logs for DB1
disk 4.DB2 and DB2 logs

Using Vsphere 4 with Veeam Rplication using CBT
If I decided not to replicate disk 4 how does VSS and Exchange deal with this? We would leave this off replication becuase these users are less critical and we are trying to conserve bandwidth. Will it still truncate the logs at each replication cycle for disk4? Or will this disk be excluded from the snapshot? Are there any other negative consequences of this scenario?
Thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy, excluding disk merely prevents our product from copying specific VMDKs over to replica. Other than that, VM processing remains absolutely the same (snapshot, VSS, logs).

The only thing you need to check is how Exchange will behave upon failover if it does not see disk 4. This is Exchange-specific stuff that I am not so sure about.
