Bare metal restore to differing hardware

Post by nubs13 »

Installed VEEAM endpoint on my dell OptiPlex 780. Trying to restore to a Dell OptiPlex 3010
after restore computer only boots to black screen with blinking cursor.
Have tried:
restoring boot record with erd
checking and setting active partition in disk part
bootrec /FixMbr and /fixboot from win7 ERD

Any ideas?

Hello Brian,
Was it an entire computer restore or volumes were allocated manually?

I was forced to do it as a manual restore because the disk sizes are different. Also had to manually partition

But it is a one disk one volume one partition install of win 7 Ent

The system volume, right? Was the System Reserved (or UEFI) partition included by any chance?

There was no system partition on the original system. Just one partition containing the OS. I eventually just used backup exec system recovery which had a few hiccups but was able to get it to work.

I did try it on matching hardware and worked first shot. Not writing off the software yet but if I continue having issues recovering to differing hardware, I would be hard pressed to consider it a viable solution.

Hello Brian,
Thank you for the clarification. Is it possible for you to share the restoration log it should be placed in the backup repository where restore backup file resides – you could share it via dropbox or googledrive and send me a PM? Without this troubleshooting information, it’s hard to say what was the root cause of this issue. Thank you in advance.

Thank you. Forwarded to QA and DEV teams - please do not delete the logs while we are investigating the cause of the issue. I’ll follow up as soon as I get any update.

Hello Brian,
Sorry for taking this so long - we were drilling the logs, and did not find any failures. I was asked to check with you the BIOS settings you are using on the restored machine. Could you try to adjust the following settings prior to booting from the restored volume:

«Secure Boot Enable» set to Disable
«Fast Boot» set to Thorough
«Boot Sequence» contains the resorted drive

Let me know the results. Thank you.
