Backup NAS content to Veeam B&R

Post by MikeBeirens »

Hi

I did read alot of tips and workarounds but no one is stable and succesfull

Situation

I have ESX server with several machines on it.
One of the machine is a server with Veeam B&R 8 on it.
I have a NAS with 800GB data on it, but I have not the storage to save it on ESX level.
I want to add the 800GB data in my backup job of a machine, so I can restore files when I want to do, so I want incremental backup.
What is the best way to manag this? Adding with subst, net use etc is not a very stable solution and I am not able to let it work..

Thank you for you help in advance :)

What kind of NAS do you use?

I did also consider that, but I'm using a lacp bond. The nas is also backup device for other purposes. If I want to split, I have to split the nics or configure ISCSI on same LAN and I prefer to avoid that option :) But the NAS have this option, true.

Edit: I'm answering the question what is now disappered :) 'Is ISCSI an option?'

Had to delete my post after I had googled your storage box specs. Unfortunately, you cannot backup a NAS box.

You could attach that NAS as an iSCSI target to any machine (either physical or virtual) then you'd be able to backup that storage with Veeam Endpoint Backup installed inside that machine. Considering what you've told in your last post, the only option in such circumstances would be to use an emulation of Tape and a File to Tape job. On the other hand, that's going to be a PITA to maintain and troubleshoot...

Oke, thank you

Maybe I gonna add a ISCSI lun to VMWare as datastore and add a VMDK to a my fileserver, put the data on that drive and Veeam B&R will see it as local, isn't?
I'm just curious about the performance..

Thank you already for your assistance ;)

It will.

It's a common practice to place VMDKs on an iSCSI LUN, however the performance depends on you storage's capabilities.

Yes, I know that is common practice, but normally I add 2 seperated nics with round robin on it on a seperated VLAN, but I have no option here to do that :) ISCSI traffic would go over the LAN subnet, therefore my doubt.

I've posted a possible solution using the Veeam File Backup to Tape feature and StarWind VTL:
