help with intraday backups

Post by sbishop »

Hi everyone, I'm currently testing veeam and so far so good.

Currently I'm backing up 15vm's (3.2TB), full on Saturday, incrementals run afterhours Monday-Friday to a storeonce repository. I also have a tape job setup to run after the backup job (secondary target).

My question is I'd like to backup my fileserver at 10am-1pm-3pm. how would I go about doing this? do I setup another new job with just the fileserver to run a full on the weekend and intranet (10am,1pm,3pm) during Monday-Friday? would this affect my above job?

Once I get this figure out I might want to add all my VM's to intraday job, how will this affect my job to tape.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

Hi,
having the same VM in two jobs will create double copies of it.

One solution is to completely exclude the fileserver from the general job, and have a dedicated job for the fileserver to run 4 times a day, 10am-1pm-3pm AND together with the general one. Then you can slowly move additional VMs to the intraday job to have additional retention points for all the other VMs you need.

Also, to guarantee this sort of schedule you'd need to set a backup job to run every 2 hours with backup window prohibiting job's execution during all hours, but 10, 13, 15.
Once I get this figure out I might want to add all my VM's to intraday job, how will this affect my job to tape.
You will need to add a newly-created job as the source of tape job. If you stick to two backup jobs, there will be two points of same archived to tape. Otherwise (if you follow Luca's advice regarding exclusion), tape job will copy only one restore point.

Thanks.

Luca, thanks for the response....just to recap what you are saying.

create 2 jobs....1 general job with all VM's except fileserver (run it at night time)...1 fileserver job run multiple times intraday.

but add the fileserver job to the "general" job at night time...how would I set that up?

for the tape...I don't need the intraday fileserver jobs to tape....

I guess Luca meant that the fileserver job should be scheduled to run 4 times a day (10am, 1pm, 3pm and the time the first job is scheduled to run at, if required).

Correct, thanks Alexander.
run the fileserver jobs when you need, but don't put it also in the general job. Simply, once a day, both jobs will run.

When you run the backups to tape wizard, you can pick multiple jobs to be sent in the same tape, just pick both created jobs:
