Hotadd not much difference

Post by brichardson1991_obk »

Hi Guys,

We've been running our backups with a proxy to utilize hotadd functionalilty and at first it seemed like a great addition as the backups of VM's were greatly sped up VM's read at 40MB/s or more taking around 1hr 50 to 2/3 hours for the entire job.

However last night we had an issue with our proxy during replication which made us turn the proxy off for backups to ensure the backup job ran properly.

Now although it doesn't use hotadd and the VM's don't get read at more than 25MB/s the job took 1 hour 36mins.

Any reason why that would be quicker over hotadd?

As I thought Hotadd was meant to aid in speeding things up.

Hi Ben,
You are correct, in general Hot-Add is faster than Network mode, however you need to review the job stats to find out if the source is a bottleneck, what processing rates are etc.
Could you provide the full stat of the same job for Hot-Add and Nbd modes?

Hi Nikita,

I'm getting the following on viewing that topic:
Information - You are not authorised to read this forum.

Job without Hotadd - 14/01/2016 00:49:53 :: Load: Source 99% > Proxy 23% > Network 0% > Target 0%
Job with hotadd - 13/01/2016 00:39:52 :: Load: Source 98% > Proxy 22% > Network 0% > Target 0%

Hi,
Sorry for the old link.

There can be at least 2 reasons why network mode works faster than nbd:
Interface between datastore and offsite proxy is faster than between the datastore and VM proxy
If virtual proxy is less productive than the physical one.

In your case Hot-Add worked faster than Nbd, so it`s really hard to tell.

Also folks need to remember that Hotadd may take longer on smaller sized jobs because of the time it takes to reconfigure the proxies both before and after the transfers can begin (usually adds 3-4 minutes on most jobs in my experience).
