Error when trying to Erasing Tapes - wrong crc sum

Post by WinstonWolf »

Hello ,

I put in Tapes which was used from Netbackup Backups before , now i moved the Tapes in the Free Media Pool .
When i try to erase the Tape in Veeam now i become the Error : 11.02.2016 11:56:18 Error Failed to erase tape B00162L5 Error: Wrong crc sum

What can be the reason for This ?

Hard to say without logs investigation, but have you tried to erase the tape manually using vendor native tools? Thanks.

That can be not the Solution , i have many ( 200 ) Tapes from an other Backup Programm which i want to use with Veeam .
The Tapes are from Netbackup .
Which Programm should i use for erasing more Tapes with one Job .
Has Veeam a Problem with erasing Tapes from another Backup Programm ?

Support writes back :
Its a known Problem ?!?!?!!? Another known Problem what Veeam with its Tape Option has ;-)

Im very angry about the "known Problems" what the Tape Option concerns.

See my other Post

One might laugh if it were not so sad

Hi,
Wrong crc sum
CRC error may refer to the storage ( tape media in your case) corruption - do you see this error code on some particular tape or its happening with every single tape you are using?
Support writes back :
Its a known Problem ?!?!?!!? Another known Problem what Veeam with its Tape Option has
Please paste the case ID to this thread, so I could look into you case details. Thanks.

i like to report that i get the same error with tapes that were previously used by arcserve (v 16.5). never got that error before. maybe caused by veeam 9? they are the first arcserve tapes i want to use since i upgraded veeam from 8 to 9.

Edit: i created a support case and uploaded some logs: 01705865

maybe caused by veeam 9?
Hard to say without logs investigation. So, let's wait and see what support engineer says about that.

For now you can try to erase tapes using native vendor tools and check whether the issue goes away.

Thanks.

i can confirm, that after i did a tape erase with the HP Library and Tape Tools, erasing a tape in veeam was also successful. this is ok for now, but a long term solution would be great.

got an answer from the support. they also confirmed that this a known issue and will be addressed in a future release.
however they provided another workaround. a tape job is able to overwrite the tape, just make sure that it's marked as free. after the job completed i was also able to erase it.

I'm having the same issue, but with brand new LTO5 tapes.
So far 6 new tapes have failed to be erased with the following errors:

Code: Select all

2/23/2016 11:07:15 AM Error Failed to erase tape SAQ165L5 Error: Tape erasure with type 1 finished with error Tape error: '23' (Data error (cyclic redundancy check).)
2/22/2016 8:15:18 PM Error Failed to erase tape SAQ191L5 Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check). Tape read error

I find it very difficult to believe that 6 new tapes would have media errors.
The drives were checked and serviced last week by IBM.
It started pretty much the same time I upgraded to v9.
I'm in the process of logging a call with Veeam and will post the case number when I've done so.

There is a known issue existing in version 9 - erase function fails, when faces Unknown or Empty MTF. The issue will be fixed in Update 1.

There are two workarounds:

- Erasing a tape, using native vendor tools, prior to leveraging it in VB&R
- Placing a tape inside required media pool manually instead of erasing it

Thanks.

Hi Stephan,

How did you go about erasing a tape with HP LTT?
I've installed the application, but cannot for the life of me find an option to erase a tape. Could you possibly point me towards a handy guide?

Hi,

Check this guide for Tape Erase utility (p. 50) and Using the Test/Utility screen (p. 22). Hope that helps.

Doesn't ITDT with erase command meet your requirements? Thanks.

[MERGED] : Will Veeam overwrite data on unprotected tapes?

Post by samuraizero »

Hi All

A lot of the tapes I get for Veeam backups are "Scratch Tapes" -- Tapes that have had data written to them previously by another type of backup software.
When I get these tapes and Veeam scans the library, they all show up fine, but with sizes like:
Capacity: 1.4gb
Free: 21.3gb

I am unable to erase these tapes using Veeam, I get an error "Failed to erase tape XXX Error: Wrong CRC Sum"

If I mark these tapes as free, will the data be overwritten, or will Veeam only write to the available space?

Thanks!

Install Update 1, it should solve the issue. If this doesn't help, kindly, move these tapes to the needed media pool manually. Thanks.

I just had a HUGE issue in which a custom patch was created for me.
I need to get my current jobs off to tape prior to updating to update 1.
In order to do that, I need empty tapes :)

If I move my tapes from undefined to FREE, will Veeam overwrite all current data or only use the free space?

Thanks, V.Eremin

You will need to move to a media pool tape jobs are pointed to. The tapes previously used by 3-party software should be totally overwritten once jobs take place. Thanks.

Apologies, I think I'm confused.

My Tape jobs point at a "Monthly" Media pool. (I write to tape once a month)
When I have new tapes (never written before) I mark them as free, and they move to a "Free" Media pool - which my jobs then grab and write to, moving them to Monthly when completed.

If I move scratch tapes to my MONTHLY pool, and mark them as free, there's no way for me to tell that they are marked as free, as they don't sit in the free pool.
They now just show as a tape, in a tape slot, with storage used, but without being part of a monthly set - Making me unaware unless I'm painstakingly recording what tape is what.

Does my description make sense?
