Setting permissions on a VBR repository for Endpoint backups

Post by neilmurphy65 »

Hi All,

I've successfully set up a test backup job using Endpoint to backup to a Veeam Backup and Replication repository. When I was setting up the permissions on the repository, the Endpoint Permissions icon was missing from the ribbon and also didn't appear when right-clicking on the repository. I followed the advice in the documentation and held down the [CTRL] key while right-clicking and then I got the permissins option. So far so good.

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/endpoint/1 ... sions.html

A couple of days later I was back in the VBR console and noticed that the Endpoint Permissions icon was now visible on the ribbon and also when right-clicking any repository.

Can anyone explain this behaviour? Can it be that the icons are only visible after a successflu Endpoint backup has completed?

Cheers,
Neil.

Hi Neil,

You're almost correct with your observations. VEB-related permission management gets visible once you have an active job pointed to this repository. By default this option is not displayed, as Veeam B&R customers might be 100% virtual only and this setting will not be relevant for them.

Thanks!

[MERGED] Backup to repository not on Veeam B&R Server

Post by kpax »

Hey Guys,

I have a couple Windows storage servers providing repository's to my Veeam B&R Server. When I point my Endpoint backup to the Veeam B&R server, I can only see repository's directly attached to the Veeam server (local storage) and not remote storage. Is this expected?

Hi kpax,

Kindly, check the permissions option on the repository. To make the repository visible – you need to add a dedicated user or enable 'allow all' access.

That worked, thanks!

Does VEB Backup directly the backup repo or does it pass data through the Veeam B&R server first?

You are welcome. It connects directly to the repository bypassing the VBR server. However, if the repository is a CIFS share - VEB will use a gateway server specified in the repository settings.

Excellent, thanks,

Now I am able to use VEB to backup a remote physical server on the far side of a VPN on a USB drive (added to VBR as a repo) attached to that physical server and use the WAN accelerator to backup copy that VEB Backup to my main site over the VPN.

Very happy, thanks!

THANK YOU!

I've wasted hours trying to find the settings for endpoint permissions. I called support and they were no help and told me to check the forums. THANK YOU!!!!

That is strange. Did you call VBR support? Do you have the case ID?

Did you configure the correct permissions on the 3 repositories as described in the user guide?

Hi Daniel,
b&r is not domain member
I am not sure it's possible without adding the VBR to domain.

You can use local machine accounts and groups to grant access.

As a workaround, you can use a local admin account from backup server for all you VEB installations.

want to secure endpoint repository against veb clients and crypto locker.
b&r is not domain member so i cant use domain groups. b&r is on dedicated vlan and only needed ports is allowed.
I create standard local user account "test" on b&r server and grant only this account to repository.
On client i use b&r\test with password in veb and only endpoint repository show in list, good.
questions;
1. how to deny clients to restore files, reconfigure veb or see repo?
2. do i need to configure ntfs acl?
3. is it possible to hide veb from user?

It’s not possible in standalone VEB installation.
do i need to configure ntfs acl?
No
is it possible to hide veb from user?
You can close tray application manually (or move it to less important aka hidden part of tray apps).

By the way, Veeam Endpoint Backup for LabTech plug-in can solve all these issues. You can centrally manage all the clients in one place and set e the managed mode (disable end user access).
