Can I backup an MS iSCSI initiator lun ?

Post by egroeg »

Put simply,

Can I backup my file server which is a VM within ESX, but the D drive (data) is just linked via a Microsoft iSCSI initiator to a LUN on the SAN as NTFS.

When I back this up in VEEAM, will it backup only my C drive or will is also capture the files from the D drive?

Hello George,

As Veeam Backup and Replication is a VM image-level backup solution, only virtual VM disks will be backed up in this case, meaning that the information which is stored on the NTFS LUN will not make into the backup.

Thanks!

Correct. Because of being raw LUN, your D drive cannot be snapshot, and image level VMware backup is only possible with snapshots.
Why did you deploy your file server this way? Is it because D drive is more than 2TB in size?
