Feature Request - Status of Scale-Out Repo Extent Evacuation

Post by ejfarrar » 1 person likes this post

I'm evacuating extents on a scale-out repository in preparation for changing which storage array my backups are stored on and once I click the "Close" button on the pop-up window that comes up when I start the evacuation, I have no way of checking on the status.

I would like to have some type of "Running Jobs" on the Backup Infrastructure tab like we have for running backups/restores/instant recovery actions.

It was recommended that I post this here when I submitted a ticket for this topic (Case #01816719)

Hello Eric and welcome to the community!
How long did the evacuation take finally?
Thanks for your request.

Would it not be possible to review the job log from within the history tab or the logs folder within ProgramData?
These are the usual places to find in-depth details on jobs in progress or completed.

I believe "History tab" doesn`t show this kind of information. Logs do, but it less usable.

My 16TB extents take an average of about 20 hours to evacuate. (I am evacuating 10x 16TB extents)

I have had a few backup jobs which required "Active Full" backups to get working again due to issues finding the UUID of the extent for previous backups.

I found that if I run more than two evacuations at once, my array gets hit pretty hard and other systems start to have disk performance issues, so I've been taking it a bit slow. My last extent is almost done evacuating now.

I did a quick test on scale-out during an trial we had. One thing I noticed was that during an evacuation was that the backup jobs using the scale out repositories was put on hold. I this still the case for latest versions? My thinking is that 10-20hours without being able to do a backup might be a problem..

20 hours looks long. That may sense to add the event to UI. Thanks for the request!

Scale-Out Repositories became available in version 9. Evacuation takes time, so if 10minutes is a critical time-out you can use another repository and quick backup.

10 minutes is not critical, but 10 hours will need to be planned. So can I assume that when evacuating that the repository is unavailable?

I just came across this thread looking for a way of seeing the extent evacuation progress and it led me to discover that this is visible via the History tab under the System list (bottom of left-hand column). I am running v9 Update 1 (Build 9.0.0.1491). I hope someone finds this useful.

Keep in mind that you have to put the extent in maintenance mode before you can evacuate backup files, so yes while evacuating the extent is unusable. That should affect jobs, though, as the SOBR would still be available during that time (unless all other extents were also in maintenance mode).

+1 I would also like to see the state of the evacuate if I close the Window. Once the window is closed, you can't then see how far the evacuate has got and possible how long it still has to go. It should show similar to "running jobs"

Evacuate session should be shown among other system sessions (History -> System). Thanks.
