How to group VMs same OS different editions

Hi,

We have in our environment ~150 desktop VMs (not VDI) which are in very different flavors.

Win7 32/64 Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise
Win8.1 32/64 same as above
Win10 32/64 same as above

I wanted to know from dedup perspective what would be the most efficient way to group VMs into jobs, for example should i collect all WIN7 32Bit to a job and WIN7 64Bit to a job regardless to it's edition or i should be more granular and create a job per OS Version + OS Bit + OS Edition?

Hi,

Just group 8.1 + 10 together (since 10 is based on 8.1) and leave all flavours of Windows 7 to stay in another group - they are not that different to segregate them.

A small tip: if you want to automatically create these jobs in Veeam B&R, I would recommend taking a look at Veeam ONE which allows setting vSphere tags to all VMs based on different properties (including Guest OS type) at 1-click. All you need to do is create dynamic group based on the OS, run data collection job to set these tags to all VMs, and then create backup jobs based on the required tag.
